GECOM’s House-to-House Registration legal – Chief Justice rules

— CJ upholds CCJ ruling that ‘court cannot set a date for elections’

— CCJ did not specify date for elections

— House-to-House Registration continues

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, August 11, 2019

Chief Justice (ag), Roxane George has ruled that there is nothing in the Caribbean Court of Justice’s (CCJ) orders of July 12, which says the exercise is unconstitutional. Additionally, the court found that the ongoing House-to-House Registration exercise is not unlawful or unconstitutional. The acting Chief Justice made her orders while handing down her ruling in the challenge to the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) registration exercise, filed by Accountant Christopher Ram.

According to GECOM’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Yolanda Ward, so far 224,000 persons have been registered.

Registration remains a legal requirement that is facilitated under the National Registration Act (NRA). It is, therefore, mandated that once a person attains the age of 14, they should register to be part of the National Register of Registrants.

A detailed report will be provided shortly. The full audio of the acting Chief Justice’s ruling is provided below.
