GPF issues warning against unlawful acts by protesters

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has issued a stern warning against protesters who engage in unlawful acts. The caution comes on the heels of a number of violent protests that occurred in several regions across the country.

“The Force respects the inalienable rights of citizens, visitors and inhabitants of the State of Guyana to engage in peaceful demonstration on issues of concern to them,” the force said in a statement issued today.

The GPF said while they have maintained their posture of restraint, the actions of those protesting have led to the injury of six police ranks and damage to property including that of the state.

Several children also sustained minor cuts and bruises as a result of the unlawful acts by the protesters.

The GPF further stated in the release: “when protest activities degenerate into public disorder, infringing on the rights of other citizens and putting the protection of life and the safeguard of property at risk, the Guyana Police Force will as a consequence, take appropriate and condign action against all offenders.”

It is confirmed that one person has been arrested after he was seen displaying a firearm in a viral video on social media. The weapon has been lodged and an investigation is pending.
