GITC kicks off its career fair -urges participants to be more involved in vocational training

DPI, GUYANA, Friday, May 11, 2018

The Guyana Industrial Training Centre (GITC) yesterday hosted a career fair under the theme, “TVET: The pathway to development” with officials urging participants to become more involved in vocational training programmes.

Administrator of the Guyana Industrial Training Centre (GITC), Dexter Cornette.

Dexter Cornette, Administrator of the GITC, told the participants that technical vocational training is the pathway to development since the country needs skilled personnel.

He noted that the fair will give students a better idea of how to create their career path, among other benefits.

The administrator said that most persons look at training programmes as ‘just training’, without seeing the connection to their country’s development.

He hopes that the fair will provide a perspective to participants, as they will soon enter the working environment.

Raymond Rahim, Sales Representative of Bumper to Bumper Service, told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that the company has been affiliated with all educational institutions in Guyana to inform participants about their services and to provide practical training.

“We are here to showcase what we have to offer. Our flagship was mainly automotive, but now we do everything with coating, wood, concrete, metal and flooring system among others you can think about.”

The sales representative said that many students have shown keen interest in the company’s work.

A Guyana Police Force (GPF) official who attended the fair said that the Force has been working for several years with the Ministry of Education to sensitise students on the danger of drugs.

He disclosed that ranks from the Narcotics Unit have occasionally gone into schools to seize drugs from students.

This exercise provides the Force with the opportunity to, “educate students about what these various drugs look like, and the ways to inform the force or adults about those they have seen with such a drug,” he noted.

Established more than 50 years ago, GITC aims to educate persons by relating training to specific occupational goals which will help to develop their ability, understanding, and a positive work ethic.
