The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) is assisting furniture manufacturers to meet required international standards. This is part of efforts to increase their market share, locally and internationally.

GNBS Executive Director Candelle Walcott-Bostwick.

GNBS’s Executive Director, Candelle Walcott-Bostwick, said the one-day training exposed wood furniture manufacturers to selecting appropriate materials.

“We believe that there is a great potential for growth in this sector by strengthening the value chain where we ensure that there is the availability of quality raw materials for our manufacturers”, Walcott-Bostwick noted, today, at the Regency Hotel, Hadfield Street.

The training focused on termite infestation, dusting of wood, inadequate or incorrect labelling of furniture, limited lifespan, poor workmanship and poor selection of wood.

Walcott-Bostwick reiterated the need for adequate conformity assessments systems to verify that the furniture was manufactured in accordance with the requirements of the relevant standards.

The training will also expose manufacturers to the standards needed to improve their market access. Furniture manufacturers learned about GYS499 2013, which could be used to facilitate trade among CARICOM member states.

Manufacturers also learned about GYS9, Part Five 2003 standard which provides the specification for labelling commodities, especially furniture. “By implementing standards, you can be guaranteed that your furniture can compete on the local regional and international markets,” Walcott-Bostwick stated.

The training was facilitated by a Jamaican consultant, Phillip Darby, in collaboration with the National Quality Infrastructure Project. The GNBS is also creating a database of local furniture manufactures.

The GNBS is working with the consultant to review it standards compliance programme with specific emphasis on the manufacturing of wooden furniture.
