Goodwill Games kicks off

DPI, GUYANA, Friday, August 18, 2017

The twenty-third Goodwill Caribbean Junior Swim, 2017 kicked off on Friday afternoon at the National Aquatic Centre, Liliendaal, East Coast, Demerara. The swim meet features participants from seven countries namely Guyana Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia, Grenada, Bahamas and Trinidad and Tobago.

The event was well attended with capacity filled stands and full contingents from all participating countries. Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources Simona Broomes attended the event and greeted the teams and lent support.

“The games here I think is wonderful, it is exciting. As a government we are promoting sports, we are promoting youths, all level of sports we are promoting, I am happy to be here to lend support from government and to show our solidarity with our swimmers and also to welcome the visiting teams here to Guyana and let them know how pleased we are as a government to have them here and to be having this competition here this afternoon”.

National senior coach Sean Baksh, said that he is confident that Guyana has a much better chance at excelling at the Goodwill Caribbean Junior Swim(meet), 2017. He said that the team is prepared “as best as we could be”.

“We have had a couple of months of training under our belt and we are very well prepared for this. Since we are at home, we have tried to field a full team and this is the first time in a number of years that we have a full team of 40 and I think we will do much better than we have done before” Baksh explained.

The swim meet will continue until August 21, 2017 at the National Aquatic Centre.  There will be an official opening of the Goodwill Games on Saturday at the Centre at 9:30 hours. Guyanese are being encouraged to come out and support team Guyana.
