Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Brathwaite to train Region Eight youths

Popular football coach Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Brathwaite will soon be imparting his knowledge and harnessing the raw talent of Region Eight’s youths.
This was disclosed by Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton who has responsibility for Culture, Youth, and Sport.

“The old folks in the villages are saying to us, we want coaches because when you give us a football, our children run behind it and kick it… so they were asking for coaches. Kato has one of the most natural grounds I have ever seen in this country, so we had to provide that,” the Minister said.
According to Minister Norton, following several discussions, Brathwaite expressed enthusiasm about his future role in the development of hinterland football.
“We have already made arrangements for him to be employed, I think he might have signed up as well. We spoke with the regional authorities and they have identified a place for him. He will be staying at Kato, however, from Kato, he would be going to all the surrounding villages like Paramakatoi, Kurukabaru, Kanapang, Itabac and back to Monkey Mountain. We are hoping to see Gordon on the ground working with all the enthusiasm that he has expressed to us.”
This move is keeping with a pledge made by the Minister to push for the development of sport countrywide.
Coach Braithwaite has the distinct honour of participating at the World Cup level as a player in 1980. In 1983, Braithwaite was named Footballer-of-the-Year; the following year he replaced Terrence Archer as National Captain. In 1985, he became the first National Captain to defeat the Mighty Cubans in an international series. The Braithwaite-led squad again humbled the Cuban team in a two-match series in January 1985 at GCC Ground, Bourda.
Additionally, the ‘Ultimate Warrior’ is also the first National Coach to lead Guyana to a Caribbean Championship final, 1991 in Kingston, Jamaica where Guyana placed fourth at the Shell Cup Finals.
