During the well-attended community meeting with residents of Red Village, Onderneeming, Minister of State, Dawn Hastings-Williams reiterated government’s support of the empowerment of citizens through education.

Her comments came as she observed the beauty of the area and urged residents to take community development into their hands while government assists. This development, she said, cannot be fulfilled if education cannot be accessed by the residents.

“You have a very beautiful community; I urge and encourage you to develop it. We will ensure access to education, which is very important because education is the vehicle for development,” the State Minister related.

She further noted the “Three B’s” initiative of President David Granger, which now assists youths to be able to access education free of cost. Touting the president as a visionary, Minister Hastings-Williams said this is part of his vision for Guyana.

“He has vision for this country, hence him embarking on this, he sees education as very important. He believes in empowering people. Your government is a caring one and we will continue to listen to you and reach out to you wherever you are,” the minister stated.

Minister Hastings-Williams continued by stressing the need to have educated citizens to ensure a happy and developed country. She maintained government’s commitment to support citizens’ achievement of relevant education.

“As a government, we have an important role to play, we have to ensure that we support our people in whatever way we can. Whatever are your needs, as a government it is our responsibility to ensure that you our people get access to education among other things to develop our country. You have to do your part and your local leaders have to do their part.”

Since assuming office in 2015, the APNU+AFC Government has made continuous steps towards empowering residents of communities to have a hand in the community’s development. This was evidenced by the restoration of Local Government Elections in 2016 and efforts to encourage the gradual departure from dependence on central government, therefore giving power to local government.

In closing, the State Minister reminded residents that their village is special to the government and just as the government was placed for a purpose, it will serve. In serving, she mentioned that they will continue empowering women, men, and youth.
