Govt electric vehicle to arrive soon

The first electric vehicle procured by the government will soon be in Guyana for testing. This as disclosed by Public Infrastructure Minister, Hon. David Patterson during a press conference today.

The procuring of the vehicle is another step by the government towards the use of renewable energy.

Minister Patterson speaking on the arrival of the vehicle said “we are in the process and when I say the process, it is in the process of arriving in Guyana, a complete electric vehicle, we procured that and we are installing a charging station at the GEA [Guyana Energy Agency] building.”

However, when the vehicle arrives it will have to undergo a number of tests by the GEA. “When it arrives, it will be powered by 100 per cent renewable energy. We are not going to put it on the grid so we can assess how it works, how feasible it is, what the cost is and things like that,” he explained.

Minister of Finance, Hon. Winston Jordan announced a proposal to amend the Customs Act to include relief from Customs duty for cars with a capacity equivalent to 2,000 cc in Watts and to waive the Excise Tax on all electric motorcycles.
