“Govt has done a lot for Mahdia, roads better than ever” – taxi driver

The roads in the mining town of Mahdia, in Potaro-Siparuni, are now way better than it was under the previous administration. This is according to taxi driver, Ashton Frasier, whose family’s wellbeing depends on him plying his daily trade.
Frasier commended the Coalition administration during a public meeting on Friday afternoon, at Brian Sucre Junction, (Kanawaruk Junction) in Mahdia.
“I must say this government has done a lot for Mahdia, especially the roads, they are much better now,” Frasier told government ministers at a community meeting on Friday.
Hon. Raphael Trotman, Minister of Natural Resources, and Hon. Ronald Bulkan, Minister of Communities, were in the village to engage residents of the mining community following the ‘Government Comes To You’oureach.
Frasier was supported by a miner, Denise Hinds, who also applauded the government for the work done in the region thus far. She took the opportunity to raise the issue of the need for better telecommunications services in her region. “We have limited internet access… If we have a tower that would go a long way… This is very important for us to get,” she proposed.
Among the other issues raised were ownership of mining lands and a mining lottery for Mahdia, similar to what the ministry has started in other regions. In this regard, Minister Trotman told residents that he would return to their region at the end of August to celebrate mining week and conduct the exercise.
“I believe it is the government’s duty and its commitment to making that possible for them [miners]. If they chose to mine, well then we have to ensure that the environment is an enabling one for them by giving them lawful access to land,” Minister Trotman explained.
He also took time to visit a nearby plot of land at Brian Sucre Junction where plans are afoot for a recreational ground for the community.
Government took its services to the people of Mahdia on Friday, August 2, an initiative which was welcomed by the residents.
