DPI, Guyana, Friday, February 15, 2018

The Government of Guyana is legal and functional and there is no risk in conducting government’s business at this time. This was stated today by Minister of State, Joseph Harmon.

During a press conference held at the Ministry of the Presidency, Minister Harmon explained that once monthly, all ministers of government meet to discuss with President David Granger, issues of national importance.

“Ministers who are not members of the Cabinet but are ministers were called together, for a ministers’ plenary, to deal with matters of national importance. This is held once a month, Cabinet is held weekly,” Minister Harmon noted.

He explained to members of the media that there is no risk with conducting the government’s business at this time as has been recently portrayed in certain sections of the media.

“We have a government that is legal and functional, we have a president who is the president of all of Guyana and a government of Guyana is in place… We have been elected by the people of this country to run this country for the next five years. We have been elected, we have not usurped, we didn’t come into office by any backdoor means, we came here by people voting.”

He noted too, the president firmly stated that:

“The Constitution provides for us to be here and the people voted for us to be here. We respect the laws and we respect the constitution and we will exert and utilise all remedies in our laws and in our constitution.”

He added that the president will meet with the Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo, to discuss matters of national interest and has never shied away from any such meeting. He pointed out, however, it is the Leader of the Opposition that has been placing limitations on accepting any meeting with the president.

The government, Minister Harmon stressed, is not concerned about the malicious statements that are being made by the Leader of the Opposition as it relates to the preparedness of Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to host elections.

He pointed out that, on the issue of members of government holding dual citizenship, the parties and the Coalition Government will make a statement at such a time when there is a final decision made by the court.

As part of government’s business, ministers are presently conducting a Rupununi Ministerial Outreach.

“This is normal government business, it is important that government always meet the people and that is the way government functions. This was not started recently; since last year we had what you call taking the government to the people.”
