Gov’t on right path to achieving “citizen-centric” governance through ICT use – CTU Secretary-General

The Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) is seeking to establish “citizen-centric seamless government” throughout the region and Guyana is on the right path to achieving this objective.
This is according to Secretary-General, CTU, Bernadette Lewis speaking on the sidelines of a youth fair hosted as part of the activities of the recently concluded CTU, ICT Roadshow.
Lewis said, “I think there is the political will to get it done.” The CTU Secretary-General said she was encouraged by the government’s work in the ICT sector.
She pointed out that government is in a unique position, which allows citizens to interface with them throughout their lives starting from the registration of their births.
From discussions with the Minister of Public Telecommunications and other senior officials, Lewis said the government has recognised the need to transition to 21st-century governance and is putting the infrastructure in place to leverage the available technology to make public services more efficient.
The citizen-centric approach, she explained, will involve paperless transactions which will save time and money.
“Think of the efficiency, the transparency that can be brought to a system if it doesn’t have to be handled like paper from desk to desk. There are tremendous efficiencies to be gained.”
The Government of Guyana, through the National Data Management Authority (NDMA), has begun the process of making available over 200 public services online, in keeping with the vision of President David Granger.
