Govt satisfied with local content, safety measures at Aurora Gold Mines – Ministers Trotman and Sharma tour mine operations

Following a ministerial tour of the Aurora Gold Mines (AGM) in north-west Mazaruni, Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman and Minister within the Ministry of Finance, Jaipaul Sharma have expressed satisfaction with local content and safety measures being applied.
The ministers were given a preview of the mining operations, that is projecting a target of over 200,000 ounces of gold for 2018.

Minister Trotman expressed satisfaction with the importance being placed on safety measures. Whilst not negating a previous mishap at Buchall Road, he noted: “We are impressed with the way you do your mine construction. We have been to see some pits around the country and this one is really outstanding. I am more impressed with the ease of operations here.”
AGM employs over 800 workers, 600 of whom are Guyanese. Local farmers and business outlets in the area who supply the mine operation with food and supplies are also benefitting. According to Minister Trotman, this dispels the claims in a local newspaper that the country loses billions of dollars in concessions to AGM and there is lack of local content. However, the minister reiterated that companies receive concessions based on merit.
“Every country in the world wishes for a certain level of investment. You want companies that give the best and have a high level of social consciousness. You pay your taxes. You do not avoid your taxes and that is the kind of company that we want to attract, we are happy with your efforts and we are seeing the dividends.”
Minister Sharma echoed similar sentiments as his colleague, as he was similarly impressed with the number of Guyanese employed and the safety measures implemented.
The tour was facilitated by President and Chief Executive Officer of AGM, Scott Caldwell, General Manager, Victor Rozon and Administrative Manager, Peter Benny.
The government has set out a gold projection of 800,000 ounces for 2018. Both ministers urged AGM to ensure that the target, of 200,000 ounces for the year, is met.
