Govt to propose legislation to  effect  measures to reduce plastic use

DPI, GUYANA, Friday, April 27, 2018

Committed to the tenets of the Green State Development Strategy (GSDS) government has agreed to implement measures that will see the reduction in the use of plastics locally.

The government’s position on the issue that poses grave environmental threats was today disclosed by Minister of State Joseph Harmon.

Global statistics show that the world is inundated with plastics that threaten the ecosystems that are essential to the well being of the planet.

Minister Harmon said Guyana is not exempted from this problem caused by the “indiscriminate use” or plastics and the inefficiency of its disposal.

In recognition of Guyana’s contribution to a healthy global environment, it was agreed that the “government will adopt and institute measures to minimize the use of plastics” and propose legislation to give effect to those measures.

World Earth Day was this year celebrated under the theme: Ending Plastic Pollution.
