The Guyana Police Force is currently looking for seven inmates of the Juvenile holding centre in Sophia.

The seven were originally part of a larger group of 12 who escaped the facility last evening.

According to a statement from the GPF, “Stringent efforts by ranks of the Guyana Police Force are currently underway to recapture seven of twelve inmates of the Juvenile Holding Centre who escaped from the facility about 23:30hours on Tuesday, May 5, 2020.”

The statement also indicated that two police officers were assaulted during the breakout and are receiving medical attention.

The release stated that the unarmed officers were relieved of the keys to some of the other cells. However, swift action by the GPF led to a search and five of the 12 juveniles were recaptured in nearby communities.
