GPF outlines Christmas security plan

The Guyana Police Force wishes to announce the launch of its security plan for the upcoming Christmas season.  This plan takes effect from today November 15, 2020 and will continue on to January 15, 2021.

While the Force remains committed to providing a secure environment throughout Guyana and through the year, in consideration of heightened economic activities through the Christmas Season it is imperative to simultaneously heighten the Force’s security posture for the period.

The plan has been rolled out country wide, however in light of the uniqueness of Georgetown (Regional Division 4 ‘A’) special emphasis will be placed on security of this Division which will be divided into 10 sectors.

Each sector will be commanded by an Assistant Superintendent, assisted by an Inspector and sufficient ranks, consisting of foot, bicycle and vehicular patrols. Foot patrols will be done between 08:00 to 18:00 hours daily. Motorcycle and vehicular patrols will be done on a twenty-four-hour basis. Foot patrols timings will be adjusted to accommodate late shopping. There will also be heightened intelligence-led special operations and focus on noise nuisance prevention with continued focus on COVID-19 enforcement.

More marine patrols will be done daily, from the mouth of the Demerara river to Dora, Timehri along with continued close collaboration with the city constabulary and business community.

To ensure the smooth flow of traffic, ranks will be placed to direct traffic despite the traffic lights.

The Traffic Department, Commander Simon Mc Bean added, will also be monitoring for speeding and driving under the influence and tow trucks will be on stand-by in cases of breaches in traffic laws.

The senior officer proffered sound advice for citizens during the holiday season.

These are as follows:

  • Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Carry only what you need.
  • Conceal valuables – cell phones etc.
  • Shop with others
  • Be prepared
  • Plan ahead.
  • Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or clothing that may draw attention.
  • Consider alternate options to pay for your merchandise, such as credit/ debit cards.

The Guyana Police is reminding all citizens that they too have a role to play in ensuring their safety hence they are urged to cooperate with the force’s ranks whenever called upon to do so. Together, this will result in the force and all stakeholders working in harmony to ensure a safe and trouble-free holiday season that can be enjoyed by all.
