The Board of Directors of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and other health officials) today, conducted assessment visits at the Industry and Enmore Polyclinic, on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) in order to improve the management and health care systems in those communities.

Chairperson of the GPHC Board of Directors, Kessaundra Alves explained that the initiative is part of the newly elected Board’s focus to enhance the conditions and services offered within the health facilities that come under the purview of the GPHC.

“This year we (the Board of Directors) want to shift our focus a bit. We want to focus on the quality of care people get and to reach out to the communities. So we are visiting our health centres to see what services they offer, what issues they have and how we can improve…So basically we want to focus on patient care in 2018,” Alves said.

She noted following discussions with the Head of the Industry Health Centre, the board is keen on addressing issues affecting the outlet in a timely manner and will be working towards improving the relationship the centre has with the GPHC.

GPHC’s Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier George Lewis said he believes the initiative will be beneficial for all those involved.

“I welcome the initiative of the board to come here and visit the health centres; so they can have a better understanding of the environment within which our staff work, and some of the challenges they encounter,” Lewis noted.

He added, “So when we have board meetings and we make recommendations, they can be able to support us and better understand the reasons for the recommendations.”

Heading the Industry Health Centre, Dr. Saska Sertimer, said, “We have had a very successful meeting, good discussions about the way forward and about our general day-to-day activities at the clinic. I am looking forward to working with the board and the other management team of the GPHC, as we continue to offer primary health care services to our community.”

The Board is expected to have two more visits to the Kitty and Campbellville Health Centres within the month of March.
