GPHC honours nurses

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, May 16, 2019

“Nurses have an enormous amount of knowledge and many diverse skills. They spend their years perfecting and developing all the time working in tough environments, where extreme stress is just a part of the job.”

These were the words of Director of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, Dr Holly Alexander as she observed that they are “the hospitality of the hospital”.

This was during a luncheon today to observe Nurses’ Week (May 12-19).

Dr. Alexander acknowledged that nurses work in the most strenuous conditions but play a key role in caring for patients.

The event was held at the hospital under the theme: ‘a voice to lead, a voice for all’.

Chairperson of the GPHC Board, Kesaundra Alves, acknowledged that nurses are the backbone of the health sector as they necessary health care to the people of Guyana. She also charged nurses with the mantle of seeking higher education.

“Your individual efforts combined to create the collective public image and perception of the GPHC and the public health sector. So, you have to hold your errant colleagues accountable, it’s a unit, we’re a group, what one does affects the other. So, you need to hold everyone accountable, making sure you’re engaging patients, putting patients first and delivering quality health care, patient centered health care,” Chairwoman Alves lectured.

“So in addition to imploring you to hold your colleagues accountable, I’d like you to seek higher educational opportunities, I want you to specialize, do your masters in public health, do your doctorate,  the sky is the limit,” she urged.

The event saw several nurses being awarded.
