GPHC salutes its social workers

In a celebration of the achievements of the profession of Social Work, the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) recognised a number of their social workers today.

Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brigadier George Lewis along with the administration’s celebrated staff.

In brief remarks, GPHC’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brigadier George Lewis expressed his gratitude towards the workers for their dedication noting that they are pivotal to the success of the administration.

“You (social workers) play important roles in terms of counselling of the patients and in the protection of vulnerable patients, and I daresay workers too. Helping them to cope with medical and other stressful issues inclusive of persons with mental disorder and even some with behavioural disorders,” Lewis remarked.

Coordinator of the Social Work Programme at the University of Guyana, Shonell Smith-Enoe, noted that social workers are crucial in the transformation of patients’ lives, “Hence, the need to celebrate the work being done by the administration’s staff.”

“The social workers at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) have demonstrated themselves as change agents dedicated to the enhancement of social and human life. I personally know that they do not just do the job but they get the job done and they do it well… they are effective and efficient”, Smith-Enoe added.

The coordinator noted that this year’s theme is quite a timely one since it speaks not only to the advancement of communities but also environmental sustainability. She said there is a need for wider links to ensure the preservation of the environment, because “when the environment is affected, persons are affected.”

Those also present at the event were GPHC Administrative Manager Fiona McKoy and Medical Registrar Industry Health Centre Dr. Saska Sertimer, among others.
