In embracing the Government’s mandate, post offices will facilitate ICT hubs within their parameters all of which will provide a conducive environment for engagement and set the atmosphere for productivity and cohesion within their space, while allowing members of the community to efficiently utilise the provided services.

The Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC), at its annual press conference yesterday, unveiled their work plan for 2018, noting their plans to rebrand and reinvent the postal service in Guyana. Included among those plans, is the improvement of the relationship shared by the postal service and members of the public.

The GPOC’s aim is “to help people, organisations, and communities grow by keeping them connected through the transfer of mail, money and information,” said Post Master General, Ms. Karen Brown.

“GPOC also plans to computerise all of its departments and post office spaces and acquire suitable software to adequately fit their business needs,” added Brown.

Fifty-four (54) of the sixty-five (65) post offices located throughout the ten (10) administrative regions are currently computerised.

One of the main projects for 2018 involves the rehabilitation of post offices, that had not been upgraded for decades, in order to install computers and Wi-Fi for residents to use as ICT hubs.

So far, community centres and locations with appropriate facilities have been used to facilitate ICT hubs instead of post offices since repairs were first done on many dilapidated post office buildings.

Just recently, the 91st ICT hub was opened at the East Ruimveldt Community Centre Ground.  More than 100 will be opened and functional before the end of 2018.
