Graham’s Hall Primary’s Dave Chowtie wins Math Quiz Competition

(May 18, 2019) – Dave Chowtie, a student of the Graham’s Hall Primary School yesterday placed first in the Department of Education Georgetown’s Math Quiz that was held at the National Centre for Education Resource Development.

The Graham’s Hall student scored 50 points following three rounds of questioning in the finals today. Placing second was Kyra Adams of West Ruimveldt Primary (47 points), in third place Akeem Fowler from Stella Maris Primary (39 points), fourth Mikaeel Nedd from St. Ambrose Primary School (33 points), fifth Kyle Melville from North Georgetown Primary School (31 points) and in sixth position, Jaden LaRose from Winfer Gardens Primary School (28 points).

The six students were the finalists following several rounds of competition that began in October of 2018. Mathematics Coordinator, Ms. Corine Osborne thanked the parents and teachers that worked with the students to ensure that they reached to the finals of the competition.

District Education Officer of the Department of Education Georgetown, Mr. Adrian Elgin said that the Department in its quest to ensure that the performance in mathematics and other subjects by students remain at the peak, a number of initiatives were executed including encouraging competitions among schools.

He said that the competition started with 27 schools and came down to six schools. He congratulated all of the participants particularly the finalist from St. Ambrose Primary since he said many persons believed that the school could not make it into the final round.

Within the three rounds of competition, each student had three questions to answer. Each round focused on a different aspect of mathematics, which were knowledge, algorithmic thinking and reasoning. Each correct response was worth five points and rebounds were worth three points.

Various topics were covered under the three main including sets, shapes and angles, decimals.
