DPI, Guyana, Monday, November 26, 2018

At the thirteenth annual Rockstone Fish Festival, the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) stated that it remains committed to supporting community-based activities.

GTA Marketing Officer, Ronald Smith noted that the annual festival is the “perfect initiative” through which the Authority showcases its support.

The Marking Officer said the role that GTA has been playing since the inaugural event over a decade ago “is a supporting one.” He further added that this has facilitated capacity building.

“The new approach the GTA is taking is to make events like these self-sustaining, independent and community-led,” Smith expressed.

Festival Consultant, Kemmy Williams told the Department of Public Information that festival “has great potential” to be a major tourist attraction.

According to Williams, “over the last thirteen years, it grew from strength to strength.”

The Rockstone Fish Festival is an annual community event that attracts hundreds of patrons each year as they participate in the many competitions held. These include the signature fishing competition, fish deboning competitions and bike races among others.

In spite of the inclement weather this weekend, patrons turned out to show their support for the activity.

Vickey Gordon popularly known as ‘Fishpro’ said he travels all the way from the West Bank of Demerara to participate in the fishing competition.  He told Department of Public Information that he is a regular participant at the festival and opined that there should be more participation in the competition.

Also sharing his sentiments was another regular competitor Ravin Persaud from Linden. He expressed that competition fishing in Guyana “is a great thing to have.”
