Guyana and India discuss State Media training
The Indian High Commissioner to Guyana His Excellency, Dr. K.J. Srinivasa, on Friday paid a courtesy call on Minister of Public Affairs within the Office of the Prime Minister, Hon. Kwame McCoy.
Speaking with DPI on the sidelines of the meeting Minister McCoy, disclosed that the meeting touched on the High Commission’s work in Guyana and how it will benefit the country.
More particularly, initiatives for the State Media with emphasis on training.
“India has been providing scholarship training over the many years, the ITEC Programme for media practitioners and other fields around the country,” the Minister said.
Talks are in the initial stage and more details will emerge as progress is made Minister McCoy noted.
“We were discussing those ideas, of course, you know the challenges we face, especially the one that has to do with the challenges of the COVID-19 and how some of these programmes could be delivered at this time given the situation of COVID-19.”
According to the Public Affairs Minister, the High Commissioner is in contact with universities and stakeholders in India to make the training possible.
“At this stage, it is more about ideas, how we could do this and not lose too much of time even though COVID exists. However, we could begin something and then move to the traditional types of training that we have been accustomed to over many years,” he stated.
Minister McCoy also commended the “commitment of the Government and people of India, to work with us as a country in different areas, inclusive of the area of media and communication to see that we can have the benefits of technology and resources to be able to make us a much better country.”
The Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme was initiated in 1964 as a bilateral programme of assistance by the Government of India.
