Guyana Convenes Second Coordination Meeting of the Group of G77 & China on BBNJ

The Fourth session of the intergovernmental conference on an international legally binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) which was scheduled for March 2020 has been postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an effort to maintain the momentum of the process, the President of the Conference, Ambassador Rena Lee of Singapore, has outlined an intersessional work programme commencing Wednesday 16th September, 2020. The President held a briefing on 14 September 2020 for all delegations to introduce the intersessional work programme and its modalities. The intersessional work programme is designed to assist delegations to enhance
their understanding of the issues and the views of different delegations.

As a result, Guyana convened a Virtual Coordination Meeting of the Group of G77+China on Tuesday 15th September 2020, to discuss the modalities of the Group’s participation in the Intersessional work programme. The meeting was chaired by Ms. Donnette Streete, Coordinator for Guyana in the BBNJ Process. Specifically, Guyana proposed a series of virtual meetings to discuss and advance the Group’s positions relevant to the various thematic areas. Guyana remains committed to ensuring that an open and transparent process of engagement is maintained in the Group, while we seek to advance our positions for the benefit of all Developing States.
