Two Grade Seven students of Queen’s College were this morning, presented with youth awards, from the Guyana Cultural Association of New York, for their notable performances in academics and culture.

Minister of Education Dr. Nicolette Henry who presented the awardees with their honours said she is proud of the achievements made by these young people and hopes that others will use them as examples going forward.

“I am happy that these students are being recognised in the presence of their colleagues for their distinguished work not only in academics but drama. As you are aware, we believe that students need to be well-prepared for a holistic perspective, therefore, culture, is very important…I have always looked to this school for academic excellence and so this morning I am happy that we have extended the breadth for what Queen’s College is recognised,” Minister Henry told the QC students attending the award ceremony in the school’s auditorium.

The minister expressed the hope to see many more students achieving excellence in academics as well as in the arts and culture. This she said, will help them to become well-rounded individuals.

Speaking with the Department of Public Information (DPI), both awardees thanked the organisation and those who assisted them to attain this recognition.

Eleven-year-old Naila Rahaman said, “I feel elated, I am really happy to have won this award and I know that I could not have done it without my parents’ help and all of my teachers.”

“I feel accomplished now that my hard work has paid off and I am being recognised for all the nights I have been studying,” twelve-year-old Nathalia Squires said.  She plans to continue to pushing forward in order to accomplish even more in the future.

Founded in 2001, the GCA has been the leader in recognising cultural representatives who have motivated excellence. In that tradition, they honour exemplars selected from global nominations of demonstrated, significant achievements in accomplishing the goals of their respective themes.
