Guyana hailed for massive Coursera enrolment
-as 709 Guyanese graduate
The executives of Coursera are lauding Guyana’s overwhelming response to online courses offered by reputable universities on its platform.
“I must say to the leaders of Guyana, we saw 15,000 course enrolments. This is two per cent of the entire country, in just the first ten days. I’ve never seen anything like it across the world,” Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Coursera, Jeff Maggioncalda said, during the virtual graduation ceremony for the Caribbean, held earlier today.
“So proud of Guyana,” Coursera Senior Adviser for Global Government Partnership, Chad Pasha added on social media, even as he congratulated Minister of Education, Hon. Priya Manickchand for her efforts. Based on Guyana’s response, Pasha said he “can’t wait to see what is to come for the nation.”
Minister Manickchand, meanwhile, expressed gratitude to the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), for helping to make the opportunity possible, noting its timeliness during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Seven hundred and nine Guyanese, from a total of 3,000 persons from 11 Caribbean territories graduated today in the virtual convocation ceremony. This number represents almost 24 per cent of the graduates.
Statistics show 33,505 Guyana registrants in total. Of the sum, 307 are from Region One; 1,062 from Region Two; 4,699 from Region Three; 18,592 from Region Four; 1,532 from Region Five; 2,918 from Region Six; 3,003 from Region Seven; 65 from Region Eight, and 278 from Region Nine.
The Ministry is putting measures in place to garner more participation from the hinterland and riverine areas.
All courses offer certificates, which are recognised by the Ministry and the Commonwealth territories. Minister Manickchand had previously announced that at least 400 Guyanese had already received their certificates.
