Guyana leading in climate change campaign – Commonwealth SG

DPI, GUYANA, Friday, May 4, 2018

Guyana is one of the countries in the world leading the fight against climate change and was today lauded by Commonwealth Secretary-General, Baroness Patricia Scotland for the “gift” of Iwokrama following the Langkawi Declaration in 1989.

Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland.

The Langkawi Declaration was signed onto by leaders during the 10th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malaysia that year and, according to Baroness Scotland, it was the first international platform to raise the issue of climate change and its impact on the world.

Iwokrama, Scotland noted, provided other countries with the understanding of how natural resources can be harnessed and preserved for use by future generations and has assisted the Commonwealth in crafting a regenerative model of development in the climate change fight.

“We are looking at how we make that better, how we have sustainability and how we face the problems that we have,” she said. The country’s commitment to becoming the “greenest” country in the world was also applauded by the Baroness.

This is in light of preparation for Petroleum production.

The Secretary-General expressed confidence that Guyana will be able to manage this resource in an environmentally sustainable manner.

She believes that the Commonwealth paved the way for the Paris Agreement which was signed by world leaders in December 2015, following the hosting of CHOGM in November 2015, in Malta.

The Commonwealth Climate Change Financial Access Hub was created and climate change advisers dispatched in several members states to help countries to better lobby the green agenda.

The Secretary-General informed too that Commonwealth is in the process of creating an Implementation Toolkit to help countries to understand the steps to be taken in order to make financial successful applications to various climate change funds.
