Guyana Records 4 new cases of COVID-19

–   23 cases confirmed since March 11.

Guyana has now recorded four new cases of COVID-19 bringing the total to 23 as of April 2, 2020.

This was disclosed by Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO) Dr. Karen Boyle during the daily COVID-19 update to the nation today.

Since the wake of the outbreak, Guyana has recorded four COVID-19 deaths with the latest fatality being that of a 59-year-old man who was in institutional isolation at the Diamond Diagnostic Center on Tuesday last.

A total of 83 persons have now been tested of this amount 23 are positive and 59 negative with one inconclusive.

Another 149 are on home quarantine while 12 are in the Ministry of Public Health’s isolation. The number of persons in institutional quarantine stands at 34.

WHO records the global figure of confirmed cases as 896,450, while the number of deaths stands at 45,526.  These figures represent 213 countries.

In the Region of the Americas, there are 216,912 confirmed cases and 4565 deaths.

Citizens are also asked to always practice social distancing in the workplace, public spaces, and while using public transportation to reduce the spread of the coronavirus diseases.

Guyana recorded its first case of COVID-19 on March 11. Since then PAHO/WHO has estimated that if advisories are not followed and citizens do not practice sanitisation, hand washing and social distancing, Guyana could see its infection rate soar in the coming weeks.
