Guyana records 63.39 % pass rate at CSEC, 100% passes in Music and Theatre Arts

Guyana achieved a 63.68 percent pass rate with Grades 1- 3 at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate Examinations (CESEC), this was announced today by Minister of Education Nicolette Henry.

Minister Henry explained that there was an increase of 0.46 percent as compared to last year. There was a one percent increase in the number of candidates that registered for the examinations which were 12,684 candidates: 12.49 percent of the entries attained Grade 1, 22.72 percent attained Grade 2, and 28.47 percent attained Grade 3.

During her report on Tuesday, at the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD), Minister Henry said overall Guyana wrote 35 subjects, and recorded a 100 percent pass rate in Music and Theatre Arts.

Students performed outstandingly  in 10 subject areas: Music with 100percent ,  Theatre Arts with 100 percent ,  Physical Education & Sports with 99.01 percent ,  Agricultural Science (DA) with 98.57 percent ,  Electronic Doc. Preparation & Management with 97.25 percent ,  Religious Education with 96.75 percent ,  Food Nutrition & Health with 91.16 percent , Industrial Technology -Building with 94.75 percent ,  Information Technology with 92.62 percent ,  Agricultural Science (SA) with 92.31 percent  and Food Nutrition & Health with 91.16 percent.

The eleven subject areas where Guyana’s “performance did not measure up when compared with last year’s performance were: Biology, English A, English B, Geography, Integrated Science, Physics, Social Studies, Spanish, Visual Arts, Human & Social Biology, and Additional Mathematics.

“We therefore recognise that these performances indicate that appropriate measures have to be taken to ensure overall

improved performance in all subject areas,” the Minister of Education stated.

Minister Henry added that the 14 subject areas Guyana showed improvement in were: Chemistry, Electronic Documentation Preparation and Management (EDPM), Economics, Office Administration (OA), Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Religious Education, Caribbean History, Textile Clothing and Fashion, Family and Resource Management, Food Nutrition & Health, Industrial Technology Building, Industrial Technology Electrical and Industrial Technology Mechanical.

Chemistry saw a 16.25 percent increase in the pass rate of Grades 1 – 3, from 41.13 percent in 2016 to 47.81 percent in 2017. Whilst, Agricultural Science (SA), French, Mathematics, and Physical Education & Sport., reflected consistent performance.

Portuguese which was offered for the first time this year, saw 83.04 percent of the entries achieving acceptable grades.

In her congratulations to the students, Minister Henry remarked that whilst 63 percent is satisfactory, works (appropriate interventions) will be undertaken in the secondary section of the education system to ensure that “we get better results”.
