Guyana to attend regional workshop-on state of marine environment

Cabinet has given its no objection to Guyana’s participation in the Regional Technical Workshop for Caribbean Sea Report (SOCAR), which is slated for August 15 to 17 in Kingston, Jamaica.

This was announced today, by Minister of State, Joseph Harmon during a post-Cabinet media briefing at the Ministry of the Presidency.  The Minister said that the workshop is aimed at addressing the monitoring and assessment of the state of the marine environment of the wider Caribbean Region.

He added that the sessions will also seek to address key environmental issues such as the threat to the wider Caribbean region; the impact of line based pollution on the marine environment and improved conditions for impaired, watershed and coastal air conditions.

Guyana will be represented by Frank Ruben, Environmental Officer, Water Quality Unit of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The Sixteenth Intergovernmental Meeting on the Action Plan for the Caribbean Environment Programme (IGM16) and Thirteenth Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Convention for the Protection and Development of the Marine Environment of the Wider Caribbean Region (COP13) was held in Cartagena, Colombia, from December 11 to 13, 2014.
