Guyana’s ICT sector in a “much better” state under Coalition – President Granger

President David Granger today restated his administration’s commitment to providing financial resources for the further development of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector in Guyana, with special emphasis on bridging the divide between the Hinterland and Coastland.

The president was speaking on the sidelines of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) ICT Roadshow hosted at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) today.

The president referred to the numerous initiatives being implemented by the Ministry of Public Telecommunications and supporting agencies to ensure ICT access is provided across the country.

The ICT Access and e-Services for Hinterland Poor and Remote Communities and the E-Government ICT Hubs Project are examples of initiatives being undertaken.

The Head of State said the Government is also receiving support from international partners, “people realise that we are serious, people realise that Guyana is not an island and we have spatial challenges, which are different from the island states.”

Reference was made to the support by the People’s Republic of China towards the One Laptop per Teacher initiative. President Granger expressed optimism that support of this kind will continue since the country is on the right path as it relates to ICT.

The creation of the Ministry of Public Telecommunications (in 2016), he said, was a good move. “We are now in a much better state in 2018 than we were before 2015.”

The Head of State added that Government, through the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) has established a regional broadcasting system to ensure that those persons in remote areas can also have access to communication services.
