GuySuCo awards first set of bursaries to NGSA students

DPI, Guyana, Friday, October 19, 2018

Children of employees of the Albion-Port Mourant Sugar Estate, who were successful at this year’s National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA), were awarded bursaries by the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo).

The students accompanied by their parents attended the annual bursary awards ceremony held on Thursday at the Albion Estate Training Centre.

The awards represented 15 out of 100 being distributed at the various estates across the country. The recipients were each given the sum of $6,000, and are entitled to an additional $1,000 each year for the next five years. This is, however, dependent on their “satisfactory attendance and performance” in school. The students have to obtain a minimum pass rate of 60 per cent each term for the next five years, in order to be eligible to continue receiving the bursary.

Albion-Port Mourant’s Estate Manager, Threbhowan Shiwprasad congratulated the students and offered them words of encouragement. “Your journey has just begun. You have a long way ahead of you. We all can’t be rocket scientists, doctors, lawyers, but we must still strive to achieve these things.”

Stressing the importance of a sound education, he said: “Education is your foundation to acquire what you need in life, please do not take your education lightly.” He also urged them “to find time to play.”

Threbhowan Shiwprasad urged the parents to make positive use of the bursary award to benefit the child. He also encouraged the parents to be the guidelines towards a brighter future for their children.

The bursary awardees were: Joshua Thomas, Navira Dhanessar, Ashmeta Jankieram, Devendra Thakoordin, Jamil Gobin, Havita Jones, Jasmine Shivpersaud, Jared Walcott, Mattew Singh, Lakhraj Ramnarin, Janaya Jaipersaud, Parmanand Mangra, Shakira Mohamed and Zahid Ally.

Similar exercises will be held throughout the country at various sugar estates. The initiative aims to motivate students to work harder to achieve better grades every term.
