GWI in meter push to comply with PUC deadline

The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is confident it can meet deadlines set by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) including installing more meters so as to reduce losses.
GWI is required to reduce its non–revenue water wastage and to report its performance to the commission bi-annually, commencing from January 2019, as part of the PUC’s approval of increased rates.
In a recent interview, company’s Managing Director, Dr. Van West-Charles said GWI has in fact begun this process through an Inter-American Development Bank and European Union (EU) funded the project particularly aimed at lowering non-revenue water.
“We have had some success to date: in the Sheet Anchor area, we’ve been able to reduce the operation of one pump station due to metering and tightening of the network…because we were able to reduce an operation at Cane Field our estimate is that we will be saving US$60,000 per annum. We are happy to align with the PUC to reduce non-revenue water.”
In addition to benefitting, GWI metering will tremendously benefit customers as it would enable them to know their consumption. The water company will also work to enhance capacity, dig more wells and construct more water treatment plants among others.
