H.E President David Granger attends ceremony to commemorate the Demerara Revolt of 1823

(Georgetown, August 20, 2016)

H.E President David Granger together with Honourable Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo, Cabinet Ministers, high level dignitaries and members of the public gathered at the 1823 monument this morning, to commemorate the Demerara Revolt.

H.E., President Granger and Honourable Prime Minister were greeted by a military salute on arrival.

One minute of silence was observed in honour of the fallen freedom fighters.

Mr. Aaron Blackman, Sport and Cultural Activist made stirring remarks on the importance of education and parental responsibility that resonated with the audience. He also thanked the Ministry of Education and the Minister within, Hon. Nicolette Henry for supporting organisation of the event.

The National Dance Company performed a reflective dance in keeping with the occasion.

Six garlands of floral tribute were laid in front of the monument, with the first garland laid by H.E President David Granger.

H.E President Granger, took the audience back to 1823 as he recalled the events, the sacrifice of the fallen and the aftermath. However, His Excellency also reminded the audience that after the revolt, the people united were able to purchase their own land.
