High-level CARICOM team to arrive May 1

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, April 30, 2020

The Guyana Elections Commission(GECOM) this evening confirmed that the high-level CARICOM team that will be overlooking the national recount of the March 2 votes, will arrive in Guyana on Friday, May 1.

While details of the arrival are unknown, Public Relations Officer (PRO) Yolanda Ward said team members will include senior lecturer at the University of the West Indies Cynthia Barrow-Giles, Commissioner of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission John Jarvis and Supervisor of Electoral Commission of St. Vincent Sylvester King.

Jarvis and King were part of the CARICOM observer mission for the March 2 poles.

The team will be taking on the role of scrutineer, as GECOM expects that it serves as a “third party” during the recount process.

GECOM had said that it was awaiting word of the team’s readiness to travel to Guyana before it could announce a commencement date for the recount.

In the meantime, the Commission’s secretariat has already commenced preparations for the highly anticipated process.

Today, some 80 staff members who will be part of the process, participated in a one-day training exercise at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC), where the recount will take place.
