Hinterland teachers to receive 80 percent increase in Remote Area Incentives (RAI)

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, November 28, 2017

With its continued push towards improving access to education in the hinterland regions, Government on Monday announced that teachers serving in these areas will see an 80 percent increase in the Remote Area Incentives (RAI).

Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan.

Finance Minister Winston Jordan said while much successes have been made in the education sector thus far, there is still one thing which will prevent Government from achieving the good life as it relates to education. According to him, this entails guaranteeing that teachers are available in all corners of the country.

“Too often, as we go out to the hinterland regions, the stories of quality of living comparisons to the coastland abound from our education officials. The cost of bread, water, cooking gas, the isolation from the wider communities, having to travel miles to get basic supplies, are only some of the daily issues confronting our hinterland teachers,” Minister Jordan told the National Assembly during the presentation of the 2018 National Budget.

According to him, in order to ensure that there is an improvement in the quality of education and opportunities for the youth, the availability of good teachers is vital, “and we must both retain and move additional teachers to those locations,” he said.

As such, Budget 2018 caters for an 80 percent increase in the RAI. Persons currently in receipt of $5,000 and $7,000 will see increases to $9,000 and $12,600, respectively.

Just, last week, while celebrating the 29th anniversary Of the Kako Primary School in Region 7, Cayuni-Mazaruni, President David Granger said government remains committed to the education of all Guyanese.

The Head of State said his administration has been placing much emphasis on boosting teachers’ capacity and enhancing education delivery and access.

According to President Granger, every Guyanese is equal and must be given equal opportunities. He said, however, that the way to achieve that equality, is through education.
