Hinterland youths development programmes in 2017

GINA, GUYANA, Thursday, October 27, 2016

Young people in the hinterland will soon have the opportunity to benefit from leadership training and other development opportunities, like their peers on the coastland.

Ministry of Education, Director of Youth, Melissa Carmichael, in an interview with the Government Information Agency (GINA), said that in 2017, the department will be placing stronger emphasis on programmes for the hinterland.

The Director pointed out that due to the remoteness of some hinterland areas, it is sometimes challenging to reach these places. However, come 2017, measures will be put in place to address that issue.

“We will be trying very hard to provide the officers that we have in those outlying Regions with necessary transportation so that they can do work for us,” Carmichael explained.

Additionally, Carmichael said that Presidential Advisor on Youth Empowerment, Aubrey Norton, has being playing an integral role towards ensuring that youths in the hinterland are a part of his empowerment programmes.

Carmichael said that Norton would, “go into those areas to take leadership programmes, training sessions and sometimes bring out young people from those regions.” She said the same would be done by the Youth Department through youth officers.

Similar youth empowerment training is being done by the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Hinterland Employment and Youth Service (HEYS) programme. The programme runs for one year and is intended to create an enabling environment where young people can become self-sufficient and empowered.
