House-to-House Registration moving on satisfactorily – GECOM’s CEO

Chief Elections Officer (CEO) of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Keith Lowenfield said the ongoing House-to-House Registration is moving apace with an increased number of field staff on the ground.
The process, which commenced on Saturday, July 20, has seen more than 20,000 Guyanese registering at the end of Day 2.

Speaking to journalists at the High Court on Tuesday, July 25, the CEO said that the soaring registration figure is a testimony to Guyanese’ wanting to get registered.
“We are going into the areas identified, we have many more teams at the front end, and people are coming out to register. We have increased the number of enumerators so that we can move the process forward,” the CEO told the media.
On Monday GECOM’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Yolanda Ward said registration remains a legal requirement that is facilitated under the National Registration Act. It is, therefore, mandated that once a person attains the age of 14, they should register to be part of the National Register of Registrants.
GECOM currently has 29 registration offices throughout the country. According to Ward, all the offices are in operation-mode for the exercise. To supplement the main offices, the elections body has also established 262 cluster offices across the country, that are being manned by Assistant Registration Officers.
Residents are urged to have available the relevant documents required for registration and be on the lookout for GECOM’s Registration Officials in their area. These documents include an original Birth Certificate, a Valid Passport, Naturalisation Certificate, Certificate of Registration, Adoption Certificate and Deed Poll or Marriage Certificate (if applicable).
