Humility helps with teamwork

─ Ministry advises new Cuba-trained doctors

Cuba-trained graduate doctors are being urged to adopt an attitude of humility as they now move into the public health sector as senior clinical physicians.

Giving a brief welcome and ad hoc orientation to the doctors, Dr. Karen Gordon-Campbell, Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO), on behalf of the Ministry of Public Health explained that being humble is the first step in embracing the ‘TEAM’ concept.

“You will find that you will have brothers and sisters who are nurses who may be not only chronologically older than yourselves but also in terms of their experience. One of the first things I think will be useful for you to recognise is that you can learn so much from those very nurses and I would urge you to be humble enough to make yourselves available to learn.”

Dr. Gordon-Campbell further indicated that acknowledging and working cooperatively with all staff within the health sector can make the doctor’s work easier. This means that each staff whether doctor, nurses or ancillary staff depend on each other for the greater good and improved image of health services locally.

Doctors must also recognize the critical role played by all staff including Ward maids, porters and the like.

“I’m just saying this for you to recognize that we are all part of a team and every member has a role that is important and we depend on each other to get the job done and if we see each other as each other’s keeper it becomes much easier to show the respect that is required and to expect respect in return.” She further explained.

The doctors who have been recently ushered into health system will be depended upon greatly to provide clinical acumen and therefore have a responsibility to be efficient and effective in communicating with both fellow staff as well as their patients.
