Hundreds of Lindeners attend Schlumberger recruitment fair

─ company continues to increase local content

DPI, Guyana, 2019, Saturday, August 24, 2019

With first oil expected in a matter of months, Schlumberger Guyana continues to increase its local content. On Saturday, the oilfield services company hosted a career fair in Linden, Upper Demerara-Berbice to recruit persons to fill several positions within their organisation.

The event was hosted at Lichas Hall in Mackenzie, where both young and old took advantage of the opportunity to engage the Schlumberger officials. The fair commenced with attendees being brief on safety in the oil and gas industry, and the work of Schlumberger after which they had the opportunity to engage with representatives one on one.

This follows a similar exercise the company undertook earlier this year in Georgetown.

Speaking to the Department of Public Information (DPI), Schlumberger’s Business Talent Acquisition Manager, Tandayi Jones remarked that while a great percentage of employees at the local office are Guyanese, they are looking to increase the content. “With the projected growth, we want to make sure we fill our pipeline so that we are ready and the Guyanese are trained-up for the opportunities we have coming.”

Jones noted that the company is ensuring that they are equipped with an able workforce by the time first oil begins pumping in 2020.

Wendy Yun, Schlumberger’s Field Engineer Recruitment Officer, noted that it is crucial to find “local content and talented people” to fill the positions in the company.  According to Yun, women make up 20% of the local staff.

“This is definitely something we are trying to increase… the population is small still but it has gotten a lot better.”

Schlumberger Guyana came in for high praise from those attending the career fair. Many noted that it opens avenues; once an applicant is selected for training and employment in the lucrative oil and gas sector

The oilfield services company has indicated its interest in conducting the exercise countrywide with Berbice being the next stop. Currently, the company has openings for Field Engineers, Field Specialists and Maintenance Technicians.
