Minister of Public Telecommunications, Catherine Hughes has encouraged the young women in the town of Linden to utilise Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to empower and educate themselves.

“You have more power at your fingertips than entire generations who came before you. Technology is a possibility; it is adaptable; it is capable but it’s only a tool. It’s not about what technology can do, it’s about what you can do with it.” 

The minister was at the time addressing participants at the Girl Stand Up Empowerment Camp which is aimed at equipping young women with developmental skills which will aid in building their confidence and self-esteem.

Minister Hughes stated that “the future of Guyana, … the future of the world depends more and more on you our young people and your ability to learn and utilise every facet of ICT.” The Public Telecommunications Minister expressed her belief that young people naturally possess ICT skills.

The young women were urged to make use of the internet to educate themselves since a world of information is within their reach. Minister Hughes also warned of the dangers of the internet and cautioned the young women to use it wisely.

The Public Telecommunications Minister underscored the fact that education is a crucial step to truly empowering oneself.
