IDCE graduates urged to “brand” themselves

On Saturday, sixty-two students graduated from the University of Guyana’s Institute of Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE) New Amsterdam Centre.
Held at the Region’s State House, New Amsterdam, the 38th graduation exercise saw the successful students receiving their certificates after completing courses in Industrial Relations and Management, Supervisory Management, Introduction to Social Work 1, Care of the Elderly, Language and Communication and Early Childhood Education.
Lecturer 1 attached to the University of Guyana Berbice Campus and director of IDCE Dr. Jacqueline Murray who delivered the feature address, urged the graduates not to settle for mediocrity, but to be the best at what they do. She further encouraged them to “represent quality” and to “brand yourselves so that employers will want to hold on to you.
Tasked with delivering the keynote, Professor Ivelaw Lloyd Griffith Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Guyana implored the graduates to develop “the qualities of virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, love and patience in increasing measure and integrate them into every fibre of your lives”.
Professor Griffith emphasised the importance of values during his keynote address as he urged the graduating class to portray Values of honesty and values of respect.
This year’s valedictorian, Ruth Darlington completed the Industrial Relations and Management Programme, earning herself a distinction. Addressing her fellow graduates, she reminisced over the past year, admitting it was hard work “studying at night and completing assignments then having to work during the next day that got me to this point.” Noting the benefits reaped were worth the sacrifices made, Darlington said, “It was worth it, we have made it, and I am pleased to have made lifelong friends during my journey,” she said.
Graduating alongside her was her mother, Dorothy Darlington who graduated with a Distinction in Care for the Elderly.
Among those who received awards for their outstanding performances were Wendy Fraser, Jacklyn Bazilio Campbell, Odella Coxall, Allison Daniels, Deborah Ramcharran and Assata Soodoo.
