IICA prepared to support agriculture priorities in Guyana – Director General

Georgetown, GINA, October 10, 2013

The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) plans to initiate a training programme next year that will pay specific attention to post – harvest technology, value added and agriculture diversification.

The announcement came after officials of the organisation led by Direction General Victor Villalobos met President Donald Ramotar and Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture Alli Baksh for talks as the 12th Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) continues.

During the talks, President Ramotar told the officials about some of his particular areas of interest for developing the agriculture sector including the use of new technologies for sugar cane, cocoa and coffee.

These visionary ideas are in keeping with the Government’s focus on promoting new and non-traditional agricultural products, developing infrastructure, adopting new and emerging technologies, and providing farmers with financial and technical support.

After listening to remarks by the Guyanese Head of State at CWA’s official launch last evening, the IICA Director General assured the President that his organisation is “not only willing, but also prepared to accompany the priorities of Guyana.”

The officials are to meet with Minister of Agriculture Dr. Leslie Ramsammy to elaborate more on the areas discussed today, and subsequently craft a programme that will incorporate all the major areas

IICA is an international organisation specialising in agriculture and rural well-being. It is headquartered in Costa Rica, with offices in 34 countries of the Americas.
