Improved water pressure for Sophia and surrounding areas in two weeks

Residents of Sophia and surrounding communities in Georgetown can look forward to improved water pressure within two weeks, after experiencing a reduced level of service for some time.

The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) will be activating a well located in the compound of the Sophia Water Treatment facility, which will serve as an additional water source for thousands of customers in communities including Sophia, Cummingslodge, Turkeyen and Pattensen.

Some 100 lengths of transmission pipelines are currently being installed by in-house staff from the well to a 10-inch diameter transmission main located in Farmer’s Field. It is from this main that the water will be distributed to the communities.

One of the water sources for the communities is the North Ruimveldt Number 2 well, which is currently out of operation following the collapse of the well casing. This resulted in the residents in sections of the aforementioned communities receiving reduced water pressure.

Chief Executive Officer of GWI, Mr. Shaik Baksh on Thursday, 7th January, 2021 visited the Sophia facility to assess the ongoing works.

“We are very much concerned about the low level of service the residents in those communities are currently experiencing. We are therefore, working assiduously to complete these works to remedy that,” Mr. Baksh said

The CEO visited several sections of Sophia where he engaged residents on the present situation and the ongoing remedial efforts by the company.

One such resident was Mr. Frederick Joseph of ‘B’ Field Sophia who was pleased to learn of the works being done. “It’s a good thing that y’all still care about us,” he remarked.

The utility continues to work assiduously to ensure that Guyanese have access to an adequate supply of water.
