Independence Farmers Market Day for Durban Park, May 27

(Georgetown, May 17, 2017) – Even as much focus is being placed on the mega flag raising ceremony carded for May 25 there are several other major activities planned including a mega Independence Farmers Market. Promoting food and nutrition security this is part of the national event for the 51st Independence celebrations in keeping with Guyana being promoted as an emerging green state.

The first of its kind in recent history, the Farmers Market Day that will be promoting entrepreneurship through agro/business initiatives is set for Saturday, May 27 at Durban Park. While shopping starts at 6:00hrs an official opening ceremony is also carded.

This event is opened to the public at no cost, and is being organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Business with specific focus on the opportunities offered by the Small Business Bureau.

The aim is to network while creating an opportunity for farmers to generate added income in addition to offering products at a reduced price. The Ministry has made it clear that this Independence initiative is not intended to, in any way, disturb the regular market day activities at the Municipal markets but will instead offer an opportunity to have fresh, and processed produce as well as arts and craft available to all shoppers at bargain prices.

Spots are free for about 80 vendors and event will offer fresh and processed produce, as well as livestock, plants and seedlings. It’s not a money making event for the Ministries but rather to provide an opportunity for vendors to sell their products and to showcase to locals the many options for home grown/made products out of the Agriculture and Cottage Industries.

The agencies involved are the:-

National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI): plants, seedlings and seeds. We are aiming to encourage all of Guyana to get back to the place of having their own kitchen garden and also to use live decorative plants to boost our objective of keeping green and healthy.

Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA): agro processing items and some fresh crops for sale and showcase. GSA is Guyana’s premier agricultural teaching and training institution with approximately 183 students attending institutions based at Mon Repos and at Essequibo. The GSA offers 6 programmes.

Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB): offers expertise and marketing advice. Some amount of rice and rice products will be for sale and chance of networking for sourcing after the market day.

Guyana Livestock Development Authority: will also offer 1000 ducklings and highbred chicken in addition to some exhibition of animals including Rabbits to display and sell. Animal care and rearing information would also be available.

The Ministry of Agriculture’s Fisheries Department will be promoting aqua culture while offering for sale at reduced prices processed seafood products. Guyana Marketing Corporation will be featuring agro-processors who will use the opportunity to educate patrons on how they can get involved in agro processing.

The Small Business Bureau: arts and craft, agro processing and cash crops. This should be seen as an opportunity give clients exposure and to network while generating sales. MMA/ADA will be having an information booth informing perspective farmers on the process of acquiring land for rice and cattle farming.
