Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Basil Williams SC says Guyana’s future is bright and people should ignore the opposition with its baseless “doom and gloom” narrative.

Addressing the National Assembly today, the Attorney General said the Deeds and Commercial Registry has been providing registration for businesses for both local and international investors. Data from the registry has shown that persons have been showing a huge interest in Guyana.

“Local companies’ applications 418, foreign companies’ application 16, new business names 9,813, business names renewed 8,619. So, I don’t know what all this talk about that we are not doing well. Why are all these people coming to register businesses in Guyana, if it was a doom and gloom situation? We all know that Guyana is the place to come.”

The AG said Guyana is on the brink of an economic revolution with the onset of oil production. He said if the situation was one of “doom and gloom”, as being pushed by the opposition, then the numbers, as shown in the register would be disappointing.

“We are rich, that can’t change, what is important for us to be rich though, is to ensure who distributes the wealth and it must not be those who distributed it in those 23 years where most of the country was impoverished.”

The Minister said while the opposition continues its “hollow” accusation of corruption against a three-year-old government, the Ministry of Legal Affairs will invest its efforts into ensuring that the needs of every Guyanese citizen are met.

Meanwhile, he reemphasized government’s commitment to fighting corruption as it “hinders economic growth and development and undermines public confidence in the administration. The Government, therefore, continues to strengthen its anti-corruption mechanisms and to formulate strategies to ensure that all Guyanese, not some, can enjoy the good life.”
