Irish Diplomats Discuss Enhancement of Bilateral Relations with Foreign Minister

Georgetown, Guyana,February 7, 2020 

Special Envoy of the Government of Ireland and Ambassador, Her Excellency Dympna Hayes, today called on Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Dr. Karen Cummings. The Special Envoy was accompanied by Ambassador of Ireland to the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, His Excellency Seán Hoy, and Deputy Director of United Nations Policy, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland, John Gilroy.

They discussed the enhancement of bilateral relations and explored cooperation in the areas of trade, health and education.  

Dr. Cummings highlighted Guyana’s “transformative economic change”, which she noted would provide more opportunities for Guyana and Ireland to collaborate, particularly in the area of trade.

Meanwhile, the two countries share a strong commitment to combatting climate change and building partnerships as set out in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Guyana and Ireland often collaborate at the multilateral level at the United Nations and World Trade Organization as well as through the [European Union] EU-African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States and EU-CARIFORUM [Caribbean Forum] mechanisms.

Guyana and Ireland established diplomatic relations on February 2, 2000.
