Iwokrama’s Open Day – highlighting the Centre’s work

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, November 14, 2018

The Iwokrama International Centre (IIC) for Rainforest Conservation and Development hosted an open day at the Umana Yana on Wednesday.

According to the centre’s Director of Resource Management and Training, Dr. Raquel Thomas the event was aimed at promoting the work IIC does.

“We had the idea to do this activity because many people in Georgetown often say “What is Iwokrama?” “What do you guys do?” Iwokrama is quite a distance away so we thought why not bring Iwokrama to Georgetown,” Dr. Thomas said.

The IIC is located in the heart of Guyana’s rainforest and is accessible via road or air. The centre focuses on wildlife research and executes various projects and programmes related to the sustainable use of an intact tropical forest.

At the event visitors were taken on a virtual tour of the centre, introduced to the team managing the facility and informed about the various activities conducted by the centre such as ecotourism packages and tours and sustainable forest management.

The event commenced early in the afternoon and continued into the evening. Schools around Georgetown were invited.

Also paying a visit to Iwokrama Open Day was Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo who is performing the functions of Acting President. The Prime Minister visited the booths and interacted with exhibitors.
