Jameel Mohamed – capturing iconic moments

The unforgettable, heart-warming image of seven-year-old, Elliana Ganpat greeting Brigadier President David Granger at the Independence flag raising ceremony went viral on social media.

There is another interesting story behind the iconic photograph.
It was captured by a young photography intern, attached to the Department of Public Information.
17-year-old photographer Jameel Mohamed has been with the DPI for a year.
Young and talented Jameel is a graduate of Queens College and hails from Vergenoegen, on the East Bank of Essequibo.
The up-and-coming photographer admitted that he was in the right place at the right time to capture the image that has been plastered on websites, social media and the pages of various publications.
“It is inspiring to me that the image has been used and shared by so many. The feeling is indescribable to see your work is appreciated.” Jameel said.

Jameel started with DPI as a work-study student during the 2017 August holidays. Now an intern making his way up, this quiet and budding photographer is emerging on the local media scene.
“What inspires me is being able to capture images that tell a story,” Jameel said.
“He is one of the youngest and most creative minds that I have encountered thus far, that will bring competitiveness to the industry,” Vish Babulall Senior Videographer noted.
Manager of the Videography Department Kawise Wishart said “For the year Jameel has been with us I have seen his skills develop. His passion for photography goes beyond the normal point and shoot. His images are louder than his quiet personality.”
