As Indigenous Heritage Month kicked off this weekend, Karrau Village in the Lower Mazaruni celebrated with a cultural festival.

The celebration saw a number of Indigenous foods, drinks, crafts, cultural ware displayed. It garnered a number of supporters from families of neighbouring Amerindian villages in Region Seven.

Toshao of Karrau, Romeo Smith applauded the council for the event and said the celebration and the month is an opportunity to remember the old ways.

“They say the younger generation is losing touch of the ancestors’ skills and ways of life. While it is good to adapt to the modern world, it is still important to understand the ways of our ancestors, especially in uncertain economic times… I hope we the younger generation will take the steps to learn the ways of our people so that our rich culture will not fade away and die.”

Also attending the heritage celebration, Region Seven Chairman, Gordon Bradford said the event is one in which residents look forward to.

Visiting the region from the West Coast Demerara, Sandy Persaud said, “I heard everyone talking about the heritage and I have never been to one before, so I decided to visit this one with my friends. I think it was good.”

Toshao of Batavia, Orin Williams and a number of residents also attended the celebration. “As a sister village, we are here to support Karrau. The village council did a really good job and I am happy to be here with my group to support them.

This year’s Amerindian Heritage Month is being observed under the theme “Proud of our Indigenous Identity, Celebrating in Unity.”
