The Kuru Kururu Small Business Association hosted its inaugural Business Expo on Saturday last with the aim of bringing more exposure to the small business in the community.

Held at the Newtown Settlement located on the Soesdyke Linden Highway, the expo saw over thirty small businesses displaying their products such as hair products, make-up artistry, photography, robotics, several homemade products including pepper sauce, green seasoning, jams and jellies and ice cream.  Several recognised businesses such as SOL Guyana Incorporated and the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GTT) also hosted informational booths.

Welcoming the initiative was resident Carmen Simon who said, “The event is a very good one because it will help small businesses to get more exposure for their products.” Simon said one of the products that stood out for her was the ‘callaloo drink’.

Keziah Stoll, who was visiting the community for the first time, said the expo will give the village more recognition. “They should have this more often so people can come and learn about each other. I’m from Friendship Village and this show has given more information about communities like Newtown.”

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Business, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Small Business Bureau (SBB), Dr. Lowell Porter reminded the residents of the value-added production in their ventures.

“There is only development if there is value added. You have to add value into what you do. If you keep on getting rid of your raw materials or your initial items, your development will be extremely slow.  If you are talking about development into your business you have to look at these little things, it is important.”

Region Four Chairperson, Genevieve Allen said the exhibition is timely since the community will officially become part of the Neighborhood Democratic Council (NDC) and has plans to establish its own industries and markets.

“This exhibition is being hosted at the time when this community is going to officially become a Neighborhood Democratic Council. This community will take charge of its own affairs. It will be each and every one of you who will determine what sort of vision and the span of development that will take place in this community. I am hoping that after you would have put in place your community leaders… we will hear of the formal opening of the Kuru Kururu market, mall and commercial area,” Allen said.

The Kururu Small Business Association was created on 1 May 2018 with the objectives of bringing exposure to businesses and services provided by residents of the community.
